Yarrow Mamout was an African Muslim merchant and landowner who lived in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.. Born in Guinea around 1736, he was enslaved for 44 years before gaining his freedom in 1796.
The portrait was completed when the painter was 79 years old, and the subject claimed to be 134 years old, although it is believed he was around 83 years old at the time. The work is considered rare for depicting an African American in the early 1800s and is currently in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
