The painting exemplifies the “Limner” style, characterized by detailed portraits, but with a flat or two-dimensional quality. The scene depicts a wealthy family of the time, with meticulous attention to elegant clothing, jewelry, and symbolic objects, such as the toy horse held by the child.
This type of family portrait was common to demonstrate social status and family cohesion.
Note: For a long time, the author of these paintings was unknown, and art historians referred to him only by the convenient name “Borden Limner,” due to a series of portraits of the Borden family. Later, through stylistic analysis and historical records, experts identified “Borden Limner” as the American artist John Samuel Blunt (1798–1835).
However, there is a small chronological discrepancy common in several archives (including Wikimedia Commons): the painting is frequently dated 1837 but the death of John Samuel Blunt is 1835 (at age 37, at sea).
This contradiction suggests that either the 1837 date refers to the time when the work was registered or finalized by another hand, or the traditional dating of the painting needs an adjustment to coincide with Blunt’s lifetime.
