Last Supper

Central German Master Gothic Symmetry and Sacrament Symbolism

An anonymous German artist structures this sacred New Testament event with remarkable medieval symmetry. Jesus Christ stands out at the center of the circular dining arrangement. The savior raises his hand to consecrate a loaf of sliced bread and a golden wine chalice. Young Saint John rests his head peacefully directly against the chest of his master. This rigid layout emphasizes the solemn importance of the very first holy Eucharist service.

Medieval Guild Artistry and Embossed Gold Backgrounds

Ten devoted apostles surround the small table while they observe the divine blessing with deep reverence. A beautifully carved Gothic wooden arch frames the entire top section of the panel painting. Intricate floral scrollwork decorates the solid embossed gold leaf background surface. Two disciples sit on simple benches with their backs turned toward the immediate foreground viewer. This exceptional masterpiece brilliantly showcases the fine craftsmanship of fifteenth-century European religious guilds.
