This vintage poster of the Franz Josef Glacier (Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere) is an original New Zealand Railways (NZR) tourist poster. It was designed by E. M. Lovell-Smith and lithographed by Coulls Somerville Wilkie in Christchurch.
The poster was created by the NZR Advertising Unit to promote train travel in New Zealand, highlighting that the glacier was “best reached by rail” through the Otira Gorge to Hokitika. The illustration shows an aerial view of the glacier, trails, and the historic Franz Josef Hotel (the large building with the red roof). Interestingly, this hotel no longer exists at its original location due to changes in the riverbed and bridge realignments.
Located on the west coast of the South Island, the Franz Josef Glacier was explored by Julius von Haast in 1865, who named it in honor of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I.
