This fine 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features a full-length profile of a French noblewoman, titled “Dame de qualité” from the reign of King Charles VII. Based on an original archival source by Gaignières dated 1460, the plate captures her standing outdoors with a medieval castle silhouette in the background.
Late Medieval Court Gown and Iconic Hennin Headpiece
The noblewoman wears an opulent crimson velvet gown featuring a high waistline, wide green silk borders, and a draped skirt over a pale violet undergarment. Her magnificent high-status attire is crowned by a towering black conical hennin headpiece with a long, translucent white veil flowing down her back.
