An original 1862 hand-colored engraving from Frank Leslie’s Monthly Magazine displays high-society American styles from the Civil War era. The fashion plate depicts four elegant women posing outdoors in a garden setting, showcasing formal afternoon attire and detailed millinery designed for the spring season.
The Mid-19th Century Hoop Skirt and Elaborate Trimmings
This historical illustration highlights the wide, bell-shaped crinoline skirts and pointed bodices characteristic of early 1860s fashion. The garments feature complex decorative elements, including a black silk dress with lace overlays, an apple green gown with a lace fichu, a tan dress with teal scalloped borders, a slate blue gown with black tiered ruffles, and elaborate matching bonnets.
