Oil painting “Frauenkopf” (“Woman’s Face”).
In Woman’s Face, Jawlensky deliberately cuts off the top of her head. This is not a reproduction error nor a digitization problem. Some important points to contextualize:
Conscious aesthetic choice
Jawlensky, especially from 1909 onwards, began to focus almost exclusively on the face as an expressive field, reducing or eliminating anatomical elements considered secondary. The cutting of the skull intensifies:
- the frontality,
- the chromatic tension,
- the iconic dimension of the face.
Influence of Russian icons and modernism
The close framing and the upper “cut” bring the painting closer to:
- the logic of Byzantine icons (where anatomical totality is not a priority),
- and also to photography and Japonism, both very present in European modernism.
This is not an isolated case
The same type of cropping occurs in many of the artist’s works:
- Head of a Woman
- Meditation (various versions)
- Abstract Head
In these works, the face functions almost as an autonomous symbol, not as an academic portrait. The cropping is part of Jawlensky’s work and artistic language; it is neither a defect nor an accident.
