This is a Chinese sports propaganda poster from the 1970s. Titled “Qinxue Kulian, Yongmeng Wanqiang,” the artwork was designed by Yan Jian of the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts and published by the People’s Sports Publishing House (Beijing) in 1979.
The slogan highlighted on the poster, Qinxue Kulian, Yongmeng Wanqiang, roughly translates to “Study diligently and train hard; be courageous, fierce, and indomitable.”
During this period in China, propaganda posters were used to promote the ideals of national strength, perseverance, and physical fitness through sports. The image depicts a dynamic football scene, focusing on the players’ physical determination and effort, serving as a metaphor for the spirit of hard work needed for the nation’s reconstruction and progress.
The style is part of a series of “Socialist Spiritual Civilization” posters that encouraged young people to participate in physical activities and cultivate a resilience mentality.
