The artwork is rich in traditional Chinese symbolism focused on longevity and vitality:
Ruicao – Refers to auspicious or medicinal herbs, such as the Lingzhi mushroom (seen in the old man’s hand), which symbolizes eternal life and good fortune. Cranes – These birds are classic symbols of longevity, wisdom, and spiritual purity in Chinese culture.
Waterfall and Nature – In Chinese landscape painting, water symbolizes wealth, and mountains represent stability and permanence. Characters – The scene depicts an elderly man and a young woman gathering herbs, an image that evokes the continuity of healing traditions and respect for nature as a source of life.
This art style, which combines traditional aesthetics with popular themes, was common in post-Cultural Revolution posters to promote cultural values and well-being.
