18th Century Rococo Opera Costume Engraving of Thetis
This original 1770s hand-colored Rococo engraving, titled “Thetis,” stems from a prestigious collection of French theatrical designs titled Dans des Fragmens d’Operas. Published in Paris by Jacques Esnault and Michel Rapilly at Rue St. Jacques, the antique plate is based on a design by Jean-Baptiste Martin and meticulously executed by engraver René Gaillard. Capturing the dramatic opulence of the Marie Antoinette era, this historic artwork serves as a premier visual record of Baroque stage craft, opera diva wardrobe customs, and late 18th-century royal court theatricality.
Baroque Stage Wardrobe, Ornate Sea-Nymph Gowns, and Period Panies
The detailed theatrical illustration highlights a spectacular operatic outfit representing the sea-nymph goddess, structured over voluminous side panniers that define the exaggerated court silhouette. The dress features a low-cut ivory satin bodice adorned with heavy pearl embroidery, long linear-patterned sleeves with pink ribboned elbows, and a dramatic sea-green draped overskirt pinned with rose-colored bows. The silver underskirt is meticulously detailed along the hemline with embossed gold seashells, coral garlands, and seaweed motifs, while the performer balances on pink high heels while lifting a hand mirror.
