Paris Fashions – Winter 1873

A Victorian fashion plate from the January 2nd, 1875 supplement of The Queen, The Lady’s Newspaper and Court Chronicle, titled “LATEST PARIS FASHIONS”. The colored engraving illustrates outdoor winter clothing styles for women and a young child against a snowy landscape with pine trees and figures ice skating in the background.

On the left, a woman stands in three-quarter profile wearing a vibrant teal or deep cyan winter cape coat with wide gold or light brown trim along the edges and horizontal bands across the front. She wears a small matching teal hat adorned with a gold band. In the center, a small child dressed in a black velvet winter tunic with red sleeves and fur trim knelt on one knee on the snow-covered ground, looking up at the woman on the right.

On the right, a woman stands in profile wearing a voluminous, layered magenta or plum-colored bustle dress with grey faux fur or ruffled fabric lining the hem and cuffs. She completes her winter outfit with a matching dark hat and a fur muff to keep her hands warm.
