Journal des Demoiselles French Etching of 1840s Ecclesiastical Dress
This authentic hand-colored fashion plate stems from the famous 1844 summer edition of the French periodical Journal des Demoiselles. The mid-19th-century steel engraving depicts a solemn interior church setting, highlighting traditional Catholic communion attire and family devotional wardrobe customs. The central maternal figure is garbed in a stately black crinoline dress layered with a transparent black lace mantelet scarf bordered in silk ruffles, showcasing the somber yet opulent dressmaking rules governing elite French parish attendance during the July Monarchy.
Antique First Communion Gowns and Mid-Nineteenth-Century Church Attire
The secondary figures illustrate specialized period wear for youth, featuring a young girl on the right prepared for her confirmation or first holy communion. She is dressed in an ethereal, high-necked white muslin or tulle gown draped under a translucent full-length bridal veil, while holding a tall liturgical wax candle. Beside her, a smaller girl stands in a structured tartan or plaid patterned frock with buttoned cuffs and a stiff straw poke bonnet, demonstrating bourgeois children’s tailoring of the 1840s. Complete with a wooden prie-dieu prayer bench covered in deep crimson upholstery, this engraving serves as an invaluable reference for religious textile history, European liturgical customs, and vintage print galleries.
