Crucifixion (1400–1420)

Westphalian Master Gothic Iconography and Emotional Devotion

An anonymous German painter illustrates the peak of the Passion narrative with intense narrative density. The vertical composition places Jesus Christ high upon the heavy wooden cross structure. Blood flows from his sacred wounds while his head rests downward in death. The Virgin Mary collapses into the arms of the holy women on the left side. These mourning figures feature large embossed gold halos to signify their profound saintly status.

International Gothic Style and Detailed Medieval Costumes

Roman soldiers and high priests surround the base of the rocky Mount Calvary hill. Centurion Longinus wears an incredibly detailed orange tunic under a pointed royal crown ornament. Two soldiers on the ground divide the discarded dark cloak of Christ near the bottom corner. Intricate incised patterns decorate the flat shimmering gold leaf background sky. This rare panel painting brilliantly demonstrates the expressive figurative style of late fourteenth-century European art.
