Original Chinese propaganda poster from the late 1970s, titled “Welcome, Friends from the Third World”. The poster was published by the Shanghai People’s Publishing House (Shanghai renmin chubanshe). The work reflects China’s foreign policy at that time, based on Mao Zedong’s “Three Worlds Theory,” which sought to position China as an ally and leader of developing nations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America against the imperialism and hegemony of superpowers.
The image depicts a diverse crowd of people from various nationalities, symbolizing international solidarity and global friendship. It is a classic example of Chinese socialist realism, using vibrant colors and cheerful expressions to convey a message of unity and optimism. During this period, China actively promoted foreign aid and cultural exchange programs with “Third World” countries to strengthen its diplomatic influence.
