Two French Gentleman – 1831

Two views, front and back, are shown of a gentleman’s outfit in this illustration for the Petit Courrier des Dames of 1831. The cut away coat on the left is a dark hunter green with wide lapels and a black velvet collar. A single pink rose sits in the top buttonhole of the lapel. The sleeve of the coat are slightly puffed at the shoulders and the cuffs are split. The gentleman wears a white waistcoat adorned with frogs and gold braid in a zigzag.

His shirt and cravat look to be black silk. He wears white trousers strapped beneath black boots with spurs. The trousers fit snugly at the thighs, and are looser at the ankle. To complete the outfit he wears white gloves, a black top hat, and he carries a walking stick with a tassel. The second gentleman at the right shows the back view of the coat in blue, with pleats at the back below the waist. Two buttons at the waist and a deep collar are displayed in this view. He wears similar white strapped trousers and a black top hat, and carries a cane.
