Sidney Opera House

The building shown is the iconic Sydney Opera House, a multi-purpose performing arts center located at Bennelong Point in Sydney, Australia.

The Sydney Opera House is situated on the Sydney Harbour waterfront and is considered a masterpiece of 20th-century modern architecture. The building was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on October 20, 1973, sixteen years after the selection of the winning design. The site is known to the traditional guardians, the Gadigal people, as Tubowgule, a place of feasting and celebration for millennia.

The unique design, characterized by a series of bright white, sail-shaped shells, was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon. Utzon drew inspiration from natural forms such as shells, bird wings, and clouds. The complex design of the “shells” used one of the first computer-aided structural analysis systems and special tiles manufactured in Sweden.

Currently, the venue is one of the world’s busiest performing arts centers, hosting over 1,600 events annually, including opera, ballet, classical and contemporary music concerts, plays, and comedy. Home to several resident companies, such as Opera Australia and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the venue attracts over ten million visitors a year.

The Sydney Opera House was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007. Utzon received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2003, the highest recognition in the field, for his work on the building.
