This image illustrates the historic R.W. Lindholm Service Station in Cloquet, Minnesota, designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1956 and opened in 1958. It is the only service station designed by Wright that was built during his lifetime, featuring a cantilevered oxidized copper roof and a glass-fronted observation lounge on the upper floor.
The building is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and continues to operate as an active service station. The structure was part of Wright’s utopian vision for “Broadacre City,” a decentralized, automobile-focused city.
The station was commissioned by Ray Lindholm, president of the Lindholm Oil Company, who also commissioned Wright to design his private home, “Mäntylä.”
