Puck – The Martyr

Religious Allegory Parodies Executive Power and Presidential Term Limits

This original historical lithograph serves as the official front cover of Puck magazine from November 1906. Acclaimed American cartoonist Udo Keppler designed this dramatic satirical artwork during a major national political debate. The central illustration portrays President Theodore Roosevelt in the role of a traditional martyr. Heavy ropes bind his arms tightly to a massive wooden post at the center of the canvas.

Third Term Pressure Caricature Details Public Demands on Theodore Roosevelt

The intricate layout highlights the immense political weight pushing against the American leader. Large block letters carve the words Third Term into the top section of the wooden stake. Orange banners reading popularity and party pressure wrap tightly around his chest like restricting chains. A dense cloud of grey smoke rises from the kindling wood pile at his feet to capture the intense campaign atmosphere.
