Nothing will grow without sunlight
Chinese propaganda poster titled “The growth of all things depends on the sun,” created around 1976 during the final phase of the Cultural Revolution. The poster depicts Chairman Mao Zedong in the center of a flourishing cotton field, surrounded by smiling peasants and workers.
The title and visual composition are metaphors for Mao Zedong’s role in Chinese society at the time; just as the sun is essential for plant growth, Mao was presented as the indispensable source of guidance and happiness for the people.
The artwork uses vibrant colors and characters with expressions of extreme joy, a common characteristic of propaganda art from that period to promote an idealized and utopian vision of life under the communist regime.
