“N” means “nuclear” ou “neutron” bomb?

The “Capitalist Bomb”: In 1977-1978, the US decided to proceed with the production of the neutron bomb. The USSR launched a huge global propaganda campaign, calling it the “capitalist bomb” because, theoretically, it would destroy human lives (through radiation) but leave buildings and infrastructure intact.

The “N” symbol in posters: From this period, was common to see the letters “A” (Atomic), “H” (Hydrogen), and “N” (Neutron) to distinguish the different types of weapons that the USSR asked to be banned.

1978 was the year in which Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev sent letters to Western governments warning that the production of this bomb was a threat to peace.

Therefore, although “nuclear” is the correct generic term for the missile, the “N” served to specifically identify the most recent technological threat of that year, which the Soviet Union was actively trying to deter through public opinion.
