Allo S[ignissi]mo Duca Durbino
Avendomi Iddio ottimo et massimo concesso immeritatamente alcuní doni
del animo et in spezie quello di cauar in pianta Paesi et città mi parera
di far gran torto ala mia paterna città d’Ancona se non auessi cercato
con ogni mio potere di fare che il mondo ne godesse con gl’occhi quel
che conoscerche udito ne avea, ond’io per renderla molto più famosa
ho voluto sotto il nome di V.E. S[ignissi]ma publicar la in ritratto non ne essendo
altro per sin’al pronte, et udito V.E. S[ignissi]ma la prenda con quel deuoto animo
che io glila porgo, che conoscendo che le sia a grado, mi dara occasione
di porgerle altri frutti del S[er]utilissimo mio giardino et fazendo
fine le bascio riuerentemente l’honorate mani, d’Ancona a di 3
di marzo 1569

To the Most Illustrious Duke of Urbino,
Since God, most good and great, has undeservedly granted me certain gifts
of the spirit, and especially that of drawing maps of regions and cities,
it would seem to me a great wrong to my native city of Ancona if I had not
done everything in my power to ensure that the world might enjoy with its eyes
what it had previously only known by hearsay. Therefore, wishing to make it
much more famous, I have desired, under Your Most Illustrious Lordship’s name,
to publish it in this depiction, having at present nothing else more fitting;
and I beg Your Most Illustrious Lordship to receive it with the same devoted
spirit with which I offer it. Knowing that it pleases you will give me occasion
to offer you further fruits of my most useful garden.
And with this I end, reverently kissing your honored hands.
