Etheral Mermaid- La Vie Parisienne magazine

Cover of an old edition of the French magazine La Vie Parisienne, a very popular illustrated publication in the early 20th century.

La Vie Parisienne (“Parisian Life”) was a weekly magazine published in Paris between 1863 and 1970, initially focusing on culture, art, theater, and society. From around 1905, under different editorial direction, the format changed and began to include attractive illustrations of women, fashion, and a light erotic restraint, very much in tune with the artistic and social spirit of the Belle Époque and later the interwar period.

The cover art has become a collector’s item today, reflecting styles such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco and often showing elegant or fantastical female figures (such as mermaids, pin-ups, flappers, etc.).

This image is located in the transition between the Art Deco and Art Nouveau, but the most accurate classification is:

Art Nouveau elements (residual)

  • Naturalistic and symbolic theme: sea, shell, idealized female figure.
  • Continuous curved line in the body and hair.
  • Lyrical sensuality, neither geometric nor mechanized.

These elements do not define the movement on their own, but reveal the illustrator’s visual training in a late Art Nouveau context.

Art Deco elements (dominant)

  • Formal simplification: cleaner volumes, less excessive ornamentation.
  • Isolated and iconic figure, without complex narrative.
  • Stable and frontal composition, designed for graphic impact.
  • Restrained palette, with flat and soft colors, not excessively decorative.
  • The typography of the title (“LA VIE PARISIENNE”) already has more regular and structured features, moving away from the typical floral style of classic Art Nouveau.
