A World War I-era American propaganda poster titled ‘Knowledge Wins’ at the top in large brown lettering. The central illustration by Dan Smith depicts a soldier in full khaki uniform and combat helmet climbing out of dark, rocky trenches. He has set aside his rifle, canteen, and military gear on the ground. The soldier prepares to step onto a stone-like bridge constructed from giant stacked books that functions as a pathway leading toward a shining, modern city skyline in the distance. The visible spines of the books are labeled with practical educational subjects such as ‘Farming’, ‘Drafting’, ‘Citizenship’, ‘Building’, ‘Machine Shop Work’, ‘Business’, ‘Seamanship’, ‘Engineering’, ‘Law’, and ‘Shipbuilding’. The lower-right corner features the text ‘Public Library Books are Free’.
