Regency Dandy Tailoring in French Modes de Paris Illustration
This authentic hand-colored fashion plate from the early 19th century, published for the Parisian periodical Petit Courrier des Dames, showcases the epitome of French dandyism and Regency-era men’s outerwear. The central figure stands confidently modeling a fitted dark brown redingote (frock coat) featuring a luxurious velvet collar, polished metal buttons, and festooned pockets. Underneath the coat, a double-layered textured cashmere waistcoat is paired with an ornate patterned cravat and high-waisted pale trousers. Completing this sophisticated outdoor ensemble are high leather riding boots with prominent knee cuffs and spurs, alongside a tall black silk top hat and a slim walking cane tucked under the arm.
Antique 1820s Parisian Men’s Walking Suits and Fashion Plates
An exceptional visual record for historic tailoring and European costume archives, this antique print illustrates the transition towards the structured silhouettes of the late Georgian and early Victorian periods. In the background, a secondary smaller figure provides a back-view perspective of a grey double-breasted overcoat, highlighting the precision of 1820s Parisian pattern makers and dressmakers. The original French text at the bottom details the garments as “Redingote à Collet de velours” and “Gilets de dessus et dessous”, making this engraving a highly searchable and targeted asset for textile historians, theater wardrobe departments, and collectors of rare Napoleonic-era lifestyle illustrations.
