Traditional Chinese Door Gods Qin Shubao and Yuchi Gong

This vibrant Chinese New Year woodblock print depicts the famous military door gods, or Menshen, named Qin Shubao and Yuchi Gong. These deified Tang dynasty generals are illustrated side by side in ornate, colorful ceremonial armor, holding traditional pole weapons to guard the household against evil spirits. The layout utilizes a deep red backdrop adorned with protective cloud motifs and legendary guardian symbols.

Mythological Sun and Moon Symbolic Meanings in Menshen Art

Positioned behind the heads of the guardians are distinct circular emblems containing the Chinese characters for the Moon (月) and the Sun (日). These motifs represent the harmonious balance of Yin and Yang energies, signifying continuous celestial protection over the home during both day and night. This traditional artwork remains a powerful symbol of good fortune, peace, and spiritual defense during Lunar New Year celebrations.

Note: The classic design and iconography of these generals as gate gods became established between the Ming and Qing dynasties (16th to 19th centuries). However, this specific format in color-printed poster (Nianhua) is a mass reproduction dating from the second half of the 20th century (c. 1950–1990). This image is a work of traditional Chinese folk art (New Year’s print or Nianhua style). It is not attributed to a single individual author, but created by artisans from regional woodblock printing workshops.
