Historical Context of the February 1790 French Fashion Plate

This hand-colored fashion plate captures French mens style in February 1790, right at the beginning of the Revolutionary era. The engraving demonstrates the lingering elegance of late eighteenth-century court fashion while adapting to the early waves of social change that demanded more streamlined and less ostentatious everyday attire for gentlemen.

Garment Analysis and Styling of Early Revolutionary Menswear

The figure features a dark tailcoat worn over a bright red waistcoat patterned with small dots and a ruffled white cravat. Complete with vibrant yellow knee-breeches, white stockings, and low shoes, the gentleman holds a sleek top hat atop his walking cane, contrasting with his classically styled, voluminous powdered wig.
