French Fashions – Autumn 1845

Two women are depicted in the countryside. There are mountains in the background, large white buildings next to a lake or river, and large trees, including a row of cypress. The woman at the left faces away and wears a white bonnet with a double ruffle at the back, and a sheer veil that blows in the breeze. She wears a light purple dress and a pink shawl. The dress has long sleeves with lace cuffs and the shawl has narrow black stripes and a deep fringe. The woman on the right wears a pink bonnet with ruching edging the brim and crown. Her blue and gray horizontaly striped dress has long sleeves. Over this she wears a black mantelet with black velvet or fur edging that is lined in pink. She carries a handkerchief.
