Fierce fighting in the Battle of Shanghai
A Chinese Nationalist (Kuomintang) war propaganda lithograph poster from 1937 structured in a comic-like multi-panel grid format, illustrating scenes from the Battle of Shanghai (Songhu). At the top right, a formal military portrait depicts General Bai Chongxi wearing glasses and an officer’s uniform.
The surrounding panels showcase active warfare: Chinese military biplanes engaging in aerial dogfights, tanks and armored vehicles advancing in formation, naval battleships exchanging heavy artillery fire near the Shanghai waterfront, and infantry soldiers entrenched behind sandbags firing rifles and operating a heavy machine gun. The main title is written in bold red characters at the top, and smaller historical labels annotate each panel.
