Geographical Layout and Early Cartography of the North American Continent

This antique Renaissance engraving represents one of the earliest separate maps dedicated entirely to North America, titled Il disegno del discoperto della noua Franza.
The layout features an expansive depiction of New France, Canada, and Florida, along with heavily detailed mountain ridges and inland river networks.
An interesting feature is the prominent Strait of Anian on the left margin, which historically symbolized the theoretical northwest passage separating America from Asia.

Decorative Renaissance Elements and Uncharted Ocean Horizons

The surrounding marine spaces, including the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, are populated with finely etched European sailing vessels.
An elegant, symmetrical strapwork cartouche is positioned in the upper-left corner, enclosing a long Italian text block that explains the modern French maritime discoveries.
Large speculative inscriptions such as Mare Setentrionale In Cognito and Terra In Cognita are clearly visible across the northern borders to indicate uncharted lands.
