1820s Late Georgian Era British Fashion Plate from Ackermann’s Repository
This exquisite hand-colored fashion engraving, titled “English Dinner Dress,” stems from the June 1, 1829 edition of Rudolph Ackermann’s famed publication, R. Ackermann’s Repository of Fashions. The antique print depicts a solitary aristocratic woman seated in an elegant side profile on a luxurious upholstered blue velvet salon armchair. Capturing the highly ornate styling of the late Georgian and early Regency transition period, this rare collectible plate provides comprehensive visual evidence of the shifts toward broader shoulder lines and extravagant millinery before the Victorian era took full hold.
Late Regency Golden Satin Dinner Gowns and Plumed Ostriche Millinery
The detailed historical illustration showcases an opulent warm-weather dinner ensemble, featuring an Aurora-colored crepe aerophane gown layered over a matching lustrous satin slip. The garment is characterized by short, voluminous puff sleeves, a form-fitting structured corsage close to the shape, and delicate bias-folded drapery running along the full length of the bell-shaped skirt. Crowned with an extraordinary matching golden-yellow hat profusely decorated with large white ostriche feathers (plumes d’autruche) and striped gauze ribbon bows, the figure is accented with long white opera gloves and a pearl drop necklace.
