Romantic Era Day Dress and Gigot Sleeve Silhouette from Joseph Robins 1833

This authentic 1833 hand-colored fashion plate, published in London by Joseph Robins for premier high-society lookbooks, serves as a definitive visual anchor for the structural architecture of early Romantic era attire. The single-figure lithograph portrays an elegant lady standing in a stylized walking pose. She models a striking ankle-length white linen day dress heavily defined by a graphic pattern of alternating straight and wavy vertical blue stripes, interspersed with delicate crimson polka dots and small botanical leaf sprigs that perfectly capture the whimsical fabric printing techniques of the 1830s.

Antique British Promenade Fashion with Pelerine Collar and Parasol

The garment is structurally distinguished by its exaggerated, voluminous leg-of-mutton or gigot sleeves that narrow sharply at the forearms, complemented by an expansive white lace pelerine collar featuring a scalloped edge and covered by a matching striped shoulder cape. A large golden rosette brooch anchors the neckline, while the lady’s waist is cinched with a coordinated fabric belt sash. Crowning her dark sausage-curl coiffure is a deep rose-pink silk bonnet decorated with towering green fabric leaves, completed with an olive green walking parasol. The print retains the original lower margin copperplate inscription by Joseph Robins, making it a critical primary source for historical costume design.
