This poster is a vibrant example of Chinese propaganda art, specifically a 1979 piece celebrating the 30th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China (1949–1979). The text at the bottom roughly translates to “The Motherland is a splendor of colors!” or “Our motherland is prosperous and colorful.”
The image features a dancer in an elegant pose, surrounded by stylized peacock feathers. This image alludes to the famous Peacock Dance, a cultural tradition of the Dai people in Yunnan, which has become a national symbol of grace and artistic progress in China.
Published at the end of the Cultural Revolution and the beginning of Deng Xiaoping’s modernization era, the poster reflects a shift towards more artistic and cultural themes rather than purely military or industrial ones.
