This original, hand-colored engraving from the January 1860 issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book captures the restrictive social customs and textile choices of Antebellum American weddings. Positioned at the very center of the composition, the bride is framed by four beautifully costumed bridesmaids, reflecting the strict stylistic hierarchy of the mid-19th century elite where specific fabric layering and colors demarcated social roles.
Design analysis of early 1860s crinoline wedding gowns
The illustration showcases the structural transition into the expansive, dome-shaped cage crinoline silhouettes that dominated the early decade. Key historical dressmaking details include the bride’s white silk gown featuring a prominent vertical column of decorative silk bows, flanked by bridesmaids wearing high-neck bodices in deep Tyrian purple, brilliant emerald green, and a unique layered grey gown detailed with vibrant magenta pink fretwork panels.
