Lithograph number 51 from the “Musée des Horreurs” (Museum of Horrors) series, entitled “Le Polichinelle Breton” (The Breton Punchinello). The series consisted of 51 anti-segregationist, nationalist, and anti-Masonic propaganda posters, published in France between October 1899 and December 1900, during the Dreyfus Affair.
The posters, designed under the pseudonym V. Lenepveu, depicted public figures who supported Alfred Dreyfus as animals or monsters, with the aim of influencing public perception of the case. The character “Breton Punchinello” represents Georges Clemenceau, a prominent journalist and politician who defended Dreyfus, known for his Breton origin.
The mention “Affaire Dreyfus” (Dreyfus Affair) on the parchment hanging around the puppet’s neck directly links it to the political scandal of the time.
