Meaning and Context
Visual Symbolism: The poster depicts two metalworkers equipped with protective clothing and helmets. The yellow sparks of molten steel visually transform into vibrant lilies, suggesting that hard industrial work results in national prosperity and beauty.
The “Four Modernizations” Period: Launched by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, these reforms focused on agriculture, industry, national defense, and science/technology. The steel industry was considered the cornerstone of industrial modernization at the time.
The Artist: Liu Kemin (1938-2022) was a renowned advertising designer and mural painter, graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1965.
