Historical 1849 Zagoskin Mercator Map of Russian America
This archival black and white document features a Mercator projection map of the northwestern coast of America, compiled by Lieutenant Lavrenty Zagoskin during his expeditions between 1842 and 1844. Written in Cyrillic script, it stands as one of the earliest recorded maps capturing the complex interior rivers and coastlines of the Alaska territory before its sale to the United States.
Early Cartographic Survey of Alaskan Waterways and Indigenous Regions
The vintage chart illustrates the geographic pathways of major river basins including the Yukon and Kuskokwim valleys. It includes an official property stamp from the Library of Congress dated 1936 in the bottom right corner, alongside an editorial caption tracking its publication history to the 1849 Journal of the Russian Geographic Society.
